Sustainable Product Development & Innovation

“What if you could understand where sustainability is really embedded in your product development process, and where it is still falling through the cracks?”
Raquel Rebelo de MiraFounder, Circoolar

In most organisations sustainability is already somewhere in product development: environmental targets, LCA studies, supplier requirements, ecodesign guidelines, circularity ambitions, sustainability claims. It gets a lot less clear the moment an actual product decision has to be made. Rather than treating sustainability as a separate assessment at the end, SPDI looks at how it is embedded across the whole development system, from strategy and requirements through to market introduction.

What it reads across
  1. Strategy
  2. Requirements
  3. Design
  4. Sourcing
  5. Development
  6. Evidence & market introduction
Strategy
Where sustainability ambition is set, before a product brief exists.
Requirements
Which sustainability requirements actually enter the brief.
Design
The choices that lock in feasibility, desirability and viability, and generate positive business and customer impact.
Sourcing
Suppliers, materials and the evidence they can provide.
Development
Where trade-offs between functions get resolved.
Evidence & market introduction
What is needed to stand behind a decision or claim, and the promises made to customers and regulators.
The questions it answers
  • Who owns the sustainability decision?
  • At which development gate should a decision be made?
  • Which requirements should enter the product brief?
  • How is sustainability balanced against cost, quality, performance and customer needs?
  • Is the evidence strong enough to support the decision, or the product claim?
  • Are sustainability ambitions surviving the journey from strategy to launch?
